Singapore International Toh Kaiwei Joins South Coast Blaze

South Coast Blaze is excited to welcome Singapore international Toh Kaiwei to our Opens squad for the next three games, bringing more than 100 international caps and a wealth of experience to the IMB Netball Premier League.

For Kai, joining Blaze is an opportunity to challenge herself in a completely new environment.

Having grown up in Singapore and captaining the Singapore Vandas, Kai has built an impressive netball career since taking up the sport just nine years ago at the age of 21. A versatile attacker, she is most at home in Wing Attack and Goal Attack but is also capable of stepping into Goal Shooter when needed.

Now, she’s embracing a new chapter in Australia.

“I’m excited to experience a different playing style, different players and a different coaching environment. It’s about getting out of my comfort zone and learning as much as I can.”

Kai says one of the biggest differences she’s noticed between Singapore and Australian netball is the style of play.

“In Singapore, the game is built around sharper passing and quicker ball movement. Here it’s more controlled and patient, with more options through the court. I’m looking forward to adapting my game and learning from that.”

Away from club netball, Kai will continue representing Singapore in the upcoming Spirit Series, an important lead-in tournament ahead of World Cup qualifying.

“It’s exciting to represent Singapore whenever I get the chance,” she said. “The Spirit Series allows us to play against teams we don’t usually face, test ourselves against different opponents and see what we’re capable of in a competitive environment.”

While supporters will quickly become familiar with her on-court leadership, outside of netball, Kai works professionally as a Project Manager for a Singapore landscape company.

Looking ahead to the rest of the season, her focus is simple.

“I want to play my game, but also elevate it. I want to be myself within this team and continue growing as a player.”

Blaze Opens Head Coach Marj has followed Kai’s career on the international stage for several years and recently had the opportunity to see her up close when the Opens faced the Singapore Vandas in a friendly during the June long weekend.

Recognising the qualities the Blaze were looking to add, Marj identified Kai as an ideal fit.

“We were looking for someone active, agile and experienced, but also someone open to feedback and excited to embrace a new environment,” Marj said.

“After seeing Kai play over several years, we knew she’d bring valuable experience while also fitting seamlessly into our playing group.”

Working closely with the Singapore Vandas, Blaze was able to coordinate this unique opportunity, allowing Kai to compete in both the Spirit Series and the IMB Netball Premier League.
