Our new Opens athletes reflect on their first 30 days at Blaze

As our South Coast Blaze Opens squad settles into a new chapter, we asked two of our newest athletes to reflect on their first 30 days in the red — the moments that stood out, the people who made them feel at home, and what it’s been like becoming part of the Blaze family. 🔥❤️

Steph Ellsmore

“Inclusive” That’s the word I’d use to describe my first 30 days at the club.

From the moment I pulled on the Blaze colours, it felt special — fresh energy, new goals, and a community I’m proud to be part of. I’ve loved being pushed out of my comfort zone and developing my game alongside experienced players I’ve competed against for years.

What has stood out most for me in the first month is how athlete-centred the club is. You genuinely feel listened to. The staff and playing group have made settling in easy,

As a Campbelltown junior from a Blaze feeder association, the club’s deep community ties mean a lot to me personally. My first month has been fun, challenging, and full of growth — and training across 23s, Opens, and with our male training partners has been a huge highlight. 🔥

“Exciting” is the word that best describes my first 30 days at the club.

Learning new things from a seasoned defensive coach has been the best part of joining the Blaze family so far and pulling on the new colours has made me feel proud and a little bit cutesy — because red is definitely my colour ❤️.

The playing group and staff have been incredibly kind and accommodating and I have been welcomed with open arms. For me I really like the communications at the club, which have been clear and consistent, we all know what we are here to achieve and how each of us can contribute as a player.

Something I’ve really noticed is the dedication from the staff and board. There is so much hard work that goes on behind the scenes just so we can step out on court and do what we love.

One highlight so far for me was watching Steph, our Assistant Coach breakdance at training — I can honestly say I never thought I’d see a coach do that! But the biggest highlight has been picking up a netball and doing what I love, alongside people who love it just as much! 🔥
